2025 South Dakota Legislature passed House Bill 1130, an act to provide permissible dates for municipal and school district elections.

Per City Ordinance 1100, effective January 1, 2026, the City of Yankton municipal election will be the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November.

Here are the tentative 2026 dates for the next City election on November 3rd:

Petition circulation begins	July 3, 2026
Petition filing due date	August 25, 2026
Voter registration deadline	October 19, 2026
Absentee voting begins at Yankton County Government Center	September 18, 2026
Election Day	November 3, 2026
Canvass (City Commission regular meeting)	November 9, 2026
Elected Commissioners sworn in and Selection of Mayor	December 14, 2026

Remember to update your voter registration: To vote for City Commission candidates, you must live within Yankton city limits, and be registered with the Yankton County Auditor.
