The following items and information are required to be submitted with a building permit application.

1. Plot plan drawn to scale showing the location and dimensions of easements, property lines, the proposed building or addition, with distances to property lines and any existing buildings on the property lines.
2. Address and legal description of the property.
3. Building plans shall include a floor plan, wall section and elevations.
4. Mechanical and plumbing plans as requested by the Building Official.
5. Building plans and plot plan shall be drawn to scale and shall show dimensions.
6. A complete list of contractors.
7. Plumbing and Electrical Contractors shall be licensed by the State of South Dakota Engineer Stamp.
8. A total project cost, (does not include land).
9. Separate plumbing permits and storm water permits may be required.

1. New construction
2. Addition to a building or structure
3. Alteration of a building or structure
4. Repair of an existing building or structure
5. Shingling, siding and window replacement
6. Demolition of a building or structure

Work exempt from permits:

Some projects located in a special flood hazard area might still require a floodplain development permit even if exempt from a building permit 

1. One-story detached accessory structures provided the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet (zoning setback requirements apply).
2. Fences not over 7 feet high (zoning setback requirements apply).
3. Retaining walls that are not over 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the grade elevation to the top of the wall, unless supporting a surcharge.
4. Water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed 5,000 gallons and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed 2 to 1.
5. Painting papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work.
6. Prefabricated swimming pools that are less than 18 inches deep
7. Swings and other playground equipment accessory to a one or two family dwelling
8. Window awnings supported by an exterior wall which do not project more than 54 inches from the exterior wall and do not require additional support.
