City of Yankton – Winter Snow & Ice Alert

As winter approaches, the City of Yankton’s Street Department is gearing up for snow and ice removal—here’s how you can help keep our streets safe, efficient, and clear during snow events.

🌨️  Our Snow Removal Plan

  • The Street Department runs a prioritized plow schedule: major streets first (highways, downtown, school zones), then collector roads, and finally residential streets.
  • Crews often work through the night to clear snow as quickly and safely as possible.

🚨 Know the Emergency Snow Routes

  • The city has designated emergency snow routes, which are prioritized for plowing.
  • Vehicles parked on these routes after 2 inches of snow accumulation may be towed, and parking is not permitted until the snow is cleared curb-to-curb.
  • If your vehicle is on these routes during a snow event, please move it off the street or to a nearby non-emergency route.

🚗Parking on All Other Streets

  • Vehicles left on the street for more than 24 hours can impede plow operations and may be fined or towed.
  • If a car blocks the plow, crews may have to come back and re-plow, plug driveways, or make additional passes, which slows down operations and adds cost.

📲Be Informed – Sign Up for Alerts nixle_badge

  • Stay up to date on snow emergencies by signing up for Nixle Alerts through the City of Yankton.
  • These alerts will let you know when a snow emergency has been declared, when plowing is happening, and how to stay in compliance.

🙌How You Can Help

  • During snow events, park off-street if you can, especially on emergency routes.
  • Be patient — residential streets are plowed after main roads, so they may take longer.
  • After plows pass, don’t push your snow back into the street — that can undo the plow’s work and create hazards.

📞Questions or Issues?

  • If you have concerns or need clarification, contact the City Street Department at 605-668-5211.
  • For code-related questions (e.g., sidewalk clearing), you can reach out to the City’s Community & Economic Development / Code Enforcement office 605-668-5251

THANK YOU FOR HELPING KEEP YANKTON SAFE THIS WINTER!
