The Discovery Bridge was dedicated on Saturday October 11, 2008. The dedication took place 84 years to the date from the original ribbon cutting for the Meridian Bridge. Special events commemorated the opening of the new Discovery Bridge.

The estimated project cost is currently $23,903,498. Work began on the structure in June of 2007 and was completed in 2008. The project included 2.1 miles of improvements in addition to the construction of a new 4 lane bridge. The project aligns US 81 south of the City of Yankton with the existing Broadway Avenue. Lighting, signals, and signage were components of the project. A second portion of the project will include the conversion of the existing Meridian Bridge to pedestrian use.
