The Yankton Department of Parks & Recreation announces the Primitive Trails on the City of Yankton’s Nebraska property southwest of the Meridian Bridge are now open to the public. Bridge users who walk south from the bridge will find signs that direct them to the trails.
The first sign encountered states the access is 1000 feet ahead so trail users should follow the old Highway 81 roadbed south. The next sign encountered is the rules sign for the area and it is found at the beginning of the gravel road which leads to the City of Yankton’s two well houses on the property. Trail users should follow the gravel road to the west and at the bend will encounter a sign stating the trail access is 400 feet to the north. The next sign encountered is at the main access point to the primitive trails and states Primitive Trails Area South Loop. Enter the wooded area at this point. The trails make a figure “8” with a south loop and a north loop. There are signs on both loops that help provide direction to those using the trails. The north loop provides access to the Missouri River shoreline. These are primitive trails with the surface consisting of dirt and sand with twigs and leaves covering them. There are some steep changes of elevation in a couple areas of the trails.
