The Yankton Municipal Cemetery was given to the City in 1972 and is a perpetual care cemetery. Responsibility for operation and maintenance of the cemetery falls under the City of Yankton Parks and Recreation Department. Operation and maintenance costs for the cemetery are paid for with interest earned by the perpetual care fund and revenues produced from openings and closings. Annually, the City provides a supplement from the General Fund to meet ongoing operational costs. The cemetery staff assist the public with choosing burial locations, provides a well-maintained setting for interments, and keeps all cemetery records current.

The cemetery also has a capital improvement plan for upkeep and new projects. Current plans include sidewalks, fencing, and landscaping improvements. Future plans include a new record keeping system and updated map.
