Yankton is a city of 14,454 and boasts a police department of 39 members (including two canines). The structure of our department consists of a Chief of Police, three Lieutenants, 3 Detectives, 3 Sergeants, 16 Sworn Officers, 2 Canines, 9 Communications Officers, Animal Control Officer and 2 Support Services staff.
The Yankton Police Department is proud to admit to still being a "mother city" in many aspects of Law Enforcement. We are also one of a handful of cities in the area to have canine units trained in drug detection and search and apprehension. The Yankton Police Department is a pro-active department and involved with extensive training not only for members of the department but also for members of our community. We are involved with the DARE Program, Safety City, Citizen's Academy, National Night Out, ShoCap and various other programs for educating our children and adult members of our community.
The department is based out of the Yankton County Courts and Safety Center building, 410 Walnut Street. The building handles all of the divisions of the department.
