Westside Park Master Planning Meeting

Westside Park Master Plan Presentation

The City of Yankton invites the public to the upcoming Parks Advisory Board meeting that will provide an opportunity to present a proposed master plan for future improvements to Westside Park.

The Dakota Territorial Museum will be relocating the buildings found in the northwest area of Westside Park in the future and that area will turn in to park green space in the short term.  Mount Marty College has been gifted the former track and athletic field that is adjacent to Westside Park and plans to utilize the space for its students’ use.  Some amenities found in the park need to be replaced as they have come to the end of their expected useful life.  With these changes and the upcoming need to replace amenities, comes an opportunity to have a master plan to guide future improvements to the park.

The public is invited to:

Parks Advisory Board Meeting
August 5, 2019- 5:30 p.m.
Community Room at CMTEA Building
1200 W. 21st Street

The public has provided input during the master planning process by attending meetings, providing feedback through email, and by giving feedback through web-based surveys.  Through this process the City has continued to hear the park is liked by patrons, but it would be great to have some facilities enhanced and a few new amenities added.  Items that received positive feedback across the three different plans presented at past meetings were: expanded parking, new play structure, expand the trail system throughout the park and around the pond with appropriate trail lighting added also, new restrooms and locate restrooms on each side of park, clean the pond, replace the bridge to the island, add an ADA accessible fishing dock to the pond, and add more picnic shelters.

The August 5 presentation of the proposed master plan again gives the public an opportunity to provide feedback as the plan will not be presented to the City Commission until Monday, August 26, 2019.
If anyone has questions regarding the meeting, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 605-668-5231.

The City of Yankton invites the public to the second community meeting in regards to planning for future improvements to Westside Park.  The upcoming community meeting will provide three park plans highlighting possible future park improvements.  The City of Yankton needs feedback on the plans as it works to design the one plan that can move forward to the City Commission.  These three plans were created using the feedback the City has received from the public and community partners during the master planning process.

With the master planning process comes an opportunity to continue to meet with neighbors of the park and other citizens in the community.  The community-wide public meeting is scheduled to gather input, and the City hopes you will make time to join us at the public planning meeting:

Westside Park Master Planning Meeting
May 6, 2019, 7:00 p.m.
Community Room at CMTEA Building
1200 W. 21st Street

Please invite anyone you know that utilizes the park or anyone who has an interest in the future improvements of the park.  It is important for the City to gather as much input as possible to create the most desired master plan possible for Westside Park.  The City looks forward to seeing you at the meeting.  If anyone has questions regarding the meeting or cannot attend but would like to provide input, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 605-668-5231.

The City of Yankton invites the public to the upcoming community meeting that will start a planning process for future improvements to Westside Park.

The Dakota Territorial Museum will be relocating the buildings found in the northwest area of Westside Park in the near future and that area will turn in to park green space in the short term.  Mount Marty College has been gifted the former track and athletic field that is adjacent to Westside Park and plans to utilize the space for its students’ use.  Some amenities found in the park need to be replaced as they have come to the end of their expected useful life.  With these changes and the upcoming need to replace amenities, comes an opportunity to meet with neighbors of the park and other citizens in the community to embark on a planning process for future improvements.

The next step in the planning process is a community-wide public meeting scheduled to gather more input on the park and engage with the community to determine what future improvements to the park could entail. The public is invited to:

Westside Park Master Planning Meeting
April 1, 2019- 7:00 p.m.
Community Room at CMTEA Building
1200 W. 21st Street

It is important for the City to gather as much input as possible to create the most desired master plan possible for Westside Park.  The public that utilizes the park should provide input so the City gains an understanding of how the public uses the park and what future uses are envisioned.  During the planning process is the time for the community to imagine the potential amenities, programming, and uses of such a highly visible park.

If you will be unable to attend the public meeting, the City of Yankton invites you to take the visual preference survey- Westside Park Master Plan Visual Preference Survey

At the public meeting, there may be a lot of questions, answers, and dialog, but if you will be unable to attend, please answer the following two questions by clicking on the blue envelop icon below:

What do you use the park for currently that you want to use it for in the future?

What else could be added or taken away from the park and you would then have a new use at the park in the future?

If anyone has questions regarding the meeting or cannot attend but would like to provide input by speaking with someone, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 605-668-5231.
