Show/Hide

City of Yankton offices including City Hall are closed to the public; however, staff is available to assist residents by phone, email, or through online services.  Regular garbage and recycling collection are not impacted.  Police, fire and other emergency services continue to operate as normal, with only minor safety precautions affecting their day to day operations.  The Yankton Community Library and the Summit Activity Center are also closed.  The City Commission unanimously approved an ordinance temporarily closing on-site services at some businesses and limiting public gathering.  For a guide to closures and full text of the ordinance, visit http://www.cityofyankton.org/covid-19

Planning a Special Event

The primary function of the Office of Special Events is to serve the community and to guide the event planners through the City's special event permitting process. All reservations for special events that desire to take place on public property (streets, parks, etc.) are initiated with our office. Our Special Events Handbook is designed to provide event planners with the necessary information about permitting, planning and producing your event in the City of Yankton

When is a Special Event Permit Required?

Special Events Permit is required for any outdoor activity taking place on city property (streets, rights of way or city parks) that is open to the general public and/or any outdoor activity requesting amplification of sound (i.e., DJ, sound system with speakers, etc.)

How do I apply for a Special Event Permit?

  • Please review the Special Events Handbook to familiarize yourself with the permitting process.
  • Call our office at (605) 668-5231 to check the date and space availability. A tentative hold will be placed on the calendar.
  • Apply Online to the Office of Special Events. Email completed application to:

Brittany LaCroix, Events Coordinator email

  • Applications must be submitted 90 days prior to event date to have your application considered. A fee may be associated with your application if received within 90 days of event date.

Application Process

  • Complete application in its entirety and submit the application no later than 90 days prior to event date.
  • A letter will be sent to the applicant outlining the requirements for the event.
  • Upon receipt of the applicants acceptance of the requirements, costs and deposit, an event coordination meeting with the applicable city departments will be scheduled, if needed.
  • Depending on the type of event, the applicant may be required to obtain additional permits.
  • Upon final approval and review by the Events Manager, a permit is issued that will include certain conditions and/or restrictions for which the applicant will be responsible to meet.
