City of Yankton offices including City Hall are closed to the public; however, staff is available to assist residents by phone, email, or through online services.  Regular garbage and recycling collection are not impacted.  Police, fire and other emergency services continue to operate as normal, with only minor safety precautions affecting their day to day operations.  The Yankton Community Library and the Summit Activity Center are also closed.  The City Commission unanimously approved an ordinance temporarily closing on-site services at some businesses and limiting public gathering.  For a guide to closures and full text of the ordinance, visit

Municipal Cemetery Viewer with Name Search

cemetery_viewerThe Yankton Cemetery now has an on-line cemetery viewer which can be used on a computer, mobile phone, or tablet device with internet connection. It is important to note that if you are using a portable device, are on the cemetery property, and have an internet connection you can use the "current location icon" located in the upper right hand corner of the viewer to pinpoint your exact location in the cemetery. Please also note that the cemetery viewer data is updated twice a year so information in the viewer is dated and the most recent activity in the cemetery from the past six months may not be available in the viewer.

There are three primary ways to identify an area of interest in the cemetery viewer.

  1. You can interact directly with the cemetery viewer map and click on a burial lot to view who is buried in the lot, who has reserved spaces in the lot, or if any spaces are available in that lot.
  2. You can search for a person's burial lot by typing in the last name only, first name only, or first few letters of the last or first name. A list of matches will appear below the search box. The matches will show a last name column, first name column, and date of death column that will be populated with information from the Cemetery's records. Click on the person of interest in the results list to locate the burial lot on the map.
  3. You can use your search results with identified burial lot location on the map and your current location in the cemetery to determine how to get to the burial lot of interest.
The Yankton Cemetery has digital pictures of the headstones located in the cemetery. Please note that the cemetery headstone pictures are updated twice a year so the most recent activity in the cemetery from the past six months may not be available. If you are interested in having a picture of a headstone e-mailed to you, please click on the e-mail icon below.  In the future, the pictures of headstones will be linked to the data found in the cemetery viewer so the pictures may also be viewed on-line.
