Children's Activities

Story Times

Story Time is intended for children 3-5 years old with an adult caregiver. The 30-45 minute sessions include stories, rhymes, finger plays, music and movement, and a craft. Story Times typically occur weekly on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:15 a.m.

Toddler Time is story time for children ages three and under, with an adult caregiver. The 30 minute sessions include several short stories, songs, rhymes, and flannel board activities. Toddler Time takes place weekly on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Sensory Play

Each morning session of Toddler Time & Story Time is followed by sensory play. PBS gives a great overview of the importance of sensory play and child development here.

After School Programs

After school programs are offered for elementary school-aged children from September through November and from January through April on Thursday afternoons.

1st Thursday: Craft day with all materials and instructions are provided.

2nd Thursday: LEGO Club with LEGOS provided by the library and creativity provided by children. The kids LEGO sculptures are then displayed for everyone to admire.

3rd Thursday: Science Club facilitated by Stephanie Siebrandt of the Yankton County 4-H office who provides hands-on science activities and experiments to explore a variety of topics.

4th Thursday: Movie day

For more details on these activities, please check our calendar.

Teen Activities

Teen Advisory Board

Teens and ‘tweens in grades 6-12 are invited to join the library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB). This group meets monthly to plan events for teens at the library. Interested individuals can pick up a TAB application form at the circulation desk.

Teen Events

Throughout the school year, events for students in grades 6-12 are generally held one Saturday a month from 2-4 p.m. Twice a year there are special after-hours events for teens.

These events are open to all teens, not just teens on the Teen Advisory Board. In the past we’ve had holiday parties, trivia, birdfeeder building, robotics projects, and more!

During the summer months, events for students are held on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. For more details on these activities, please check our calendar.

Adult Activities

Unplug, Unwind, Craft

Participants make a craft item with materials furnished by the library. Some crafts are holiday themed. Registration is required. There is a $5 fee.

Teen Tech Tutors

Students from the Yankton High School National Honor Society meet with anyone who needs one-on-one help with devices and computer applications. Registration is required. There is no fee.

Book Clubs

Both book clubs, which meet at the library, are open to anyone who wishes to join. There is no fee.

  • Readers Anonymous meets the second Tuesday of every month at 1 p.m. and reads all types of fiction.
  • Between the Lines meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. and reads both fiction and nonfiction.

Book A Librarian

If you need help setting up your accounts for eBooks and eMagazines, call the library, make an appointment, and we’ll walk you through the process.
