firesafetyPublic Fire Safety Education is a priority for the members of the Yankton Volunteer Fire Department. This commitment is demonstrated in the various classes, tours and inspections available through the department.

The Fire Safety Trailer, purchased jointly by the Vermillion and Yankton Volunteer Firefighters, is used to teach escape plans and home fire drills. The safety house visits area schools and is available for other youth groups as well.

The members of the Yankton Fire Department respond to over 250 calls for service each year including fires, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergencies in the City of Yankton and the Yankton Fire Protection District. A quality training program helps keep the forty-five (45) volunteer firefighters and two (2) career Chief Officers ready to respond to these emergencies.

The Yankton Fire Department is always available to provide public fire prevention and fire safety education by request. Fire Prevention Week, is the busiest time of the year in the schools and around the station. During that week, firefighters visit schools to speak with children from pre-school through 3rd grade about fire safety. Also during that week and open house is held at Fire Station #2 to allow the public to tour the station, view apparatus and equipment, receive fire safety information and talk with the firefighters that serve them.

A Fire Prevention Week open house will be held at Fire Station #2 (201 W 23rd Street) Wednesday October 11, 2017 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  Hot dogs and refreshments will be served.
