Between 2012 and 2015 the City of Yankton acquired about 40 acres of property, formerly part of the State of South Dakota’s Human Services Center campus, at the intersection of Broadway Avenue/Highway 81 & 31st Street.  Because of the property’s history and prominent location at the gateway to the community, it was important to make sure citizens had a chance to share their visions for the future of the property.

Input was sought from stakeholders, nonprofit organizations, neighboring property owners, and the community at large during Community Land Use Workshops in early 2016.  A team of design professionals took those collected visions and developed the Mead Neighborhood Concept.  The ideas contained in this document ranging from the neighborhood name and layout to the property uses, came from what community members said they envisioned happening on the site over the next 10 or 20 years.  The City of Yankton hopes to use this broad vision to help steer future development and make sure the area continues to be a place of pride for all residents of Yankton.
